In Conference Room #8 in the Media Center, Provence Level
Chairperson:  Shirley Sidey RN. BScN., Daren Tourigny
This meeting was free and open to all appropriately interested.

There was a strong turnout for this meeting consisting of some who had attended previously but mainly there were new faces.  Each person was asked to introduce themselves and outline briefly their medical experience and/or difficulties.  With the new input and questions over a wide range of cardiac problems it became very interesting. Fortunately with Shirley's personal medical history as well as her experience as an operating room cardiac nurse at Lions Gate Hospital in North Van she was able to clarify much of the misinformation, confusion and fears of most.

Surrey Memorial

SMH has just initiated a self - help group for ICD clients serving the South Fraser Health Region.  Our first meeting occurred on Wed Oct. 18 which was supported by Darren Tourigny from the St. Paul's PASH group.  Members within the newly formed SMH's group have expressed the desire to become a satelite group of the St.Paul's PASH group with the eventual aim to include not just ICD clients but all Pacemaker devices along with arrythmias.

Our second meeting occurred on Dec 1 with 5 members present in total, 2 being new that day.  We were fortunate to have Jocelyn Cooper come and speak to the group to answer questions and concerns that members had identified in the first meeting. Jocelyn was able to answer all the concerns in her competent and caring manner due to her years of experience of working with these devices. Her focus of discussion included the origins of ICD'S, rationale for implantation including primary and secondary classifications.  She explained the components of an ICD device thru discussion and old models from the very first model to the recent much smaller and compact one of today. She described the mechanics of operation and lifestyle issues in living with an ICD. The clients appreciated her expertise and engaging manner tremendously and we thank her once again.  The next meeting for the SMH GROUP will be held in Jan. the date pending until a group consensus is reached.

January 18, 2005

Shirley Sidey RN. BScN. will speak at the January meeting on Heart Function, Disorders & Remedies.  This meeting will be open to questions and discussion pertaining to LAF (Lone Atrial Fibrillation), ablations and other topics rather than focusing mostly on pacemakers. Current information on defibrillators and pacemakers will be included as well as perhaps any latest news such as the use of microwaves for stopping impulses creating extra heart beats, and other such topics of interest.
